New blog series: Successful market launch thanks to the “Kids Design Award”

With the “Kids Design Award”, Kind +Jugend supports innovative children’s furniture concepts and brings designers and producers together – for example Jannis Ellenberger, award winner in 2014, and the manufacturer de Breuyn.

The winning concept is a modular system, composed of a sideboard with furniture for sitting and working; white shelves and cupboards with slender oak feet – purist, light and modern. Cupboard doors and seat upholstery with colourful felt surfaces set a homelike accent and create an atmosphere of comfort. But the show-stopper is the fact that the children’s desk can be integrated seamlessly, making the ensemble a multi-functional furniture programme that can be used flexibly and in various contexts: in the children’s, living, or guest room and in the home office, but also in waiting rooms, libraries or design hotels.

Proven excellence: modular furniture for parents and kids

With this concept, Bremen-based designer Jannis Ellenberger managed to convince the jury for the Kids Design Award at Kind + Jugend 2014 – the premiere for the new contest by the leading international trade fair for the baby and toddler outfitting sector. “At Kind + Jugend, we show the latest trends and product ideas, providing inspiration for everybody in the industry,” says Thomas Postert, project manager of Kind + Jugend at Koelnmesse. “With the award, we are consequently pursuing this concept because we want to connect innovative designers and manufacturers of children’s furniture in order to help trendsetting ideas to bloom into marketability.”

A total of 51 applications for the Kids Design Award were sent to Koelnmesse; out of these, a jury of design and children’s furniture experts nominated ten concepts that were exhibited as prototypes – and attracted much attention from the trade visitors. At last, Jannis Ellenberger was awarded with the Kids Design Promotion Prize for his modular furniture system. “His design concept fulfilled the aesthetic, qualitative and functional criteria as well as the requirements regarding the usability of the furniture in a family context in the best possible way. That’s why our jury selected him as the winner,” emphasises Thomas Postert.

Achieving marketability thanks to sponsors from the industry

Juror Jörg de Breuyn spotted the marketability potential of the modular concept right away: “The furniture supports and promotes the way parents and kids live together; it is aesthetically pleasing while at the same offering excellent utility. This is exactly what design conscious parents expect these days. There is a market for this kind of furniture.” The manufacturer, based in Cologne, has become the product sponsor for Ellenberger’s concept and is now readying it for the market. The result can then be seen at Kind + Jugend 2015.

In the coming weeks and months, we will tell the entire story of the project – from idea through to the market-ready product – on this blog. We will shed a light on the children’s furniture market, ask designers and producers about their ideas and will discuss how to earn money with children’s furniture. In the next edition, you will also learn more about Jannis Ellenberger and manufacturer Jörg de Breuyn. And of course we’re looking forward to your thoughts and contributions: how do you feel about the project? Follow us on Facebook and Twitter and get in touch with us.

By the way: The Kids Design Award 2015 has already been started. As of now, up-and-coming design talents can submit their concepts and drafts for children’s furniture and inventive items. We’re excited to see great ideas!
