Steppingstone into the market – the Kids Design Award is about to enter its second round

Design plays an ever increasing role – that also applies to the children’s items and furniture sector. Open floor plans, the fusion of once separated living areas and the digitization of the living room pose new challenges when it comes to creating furniture for the little ones. That’s why Kind + Jugend is picking up these future trends, supporting innovative design concepts and bringing together manufacturers and designers.

In 2015, Kind + Jugend will be hosting the Kids Design Award for the second time. And for the first time, it will be supported by the Verband Deutscher Industriedesigner (VDID), the German Association of Industrial Designers. As of now, design students and up-and-coming designers from around the world are asked to submit their ideas in the areas of children’s items and furniture. The competition seeks creative concepts that are inventive and trendsetting in terms of their function and design. The 10 best product ideas will then be presented on their personal stage at Kind + Jugend 2015 to an international audience, giving the designers the opportunity to network and socialize with industry specialists. Among the nominees, an international expert jury from the design, industry and education sectors will select the most convincing design and thus the winner of the Kids Design Award 2015.

But that’s not the end of it. In addition, designers have the chance to win a promotion prize that’s quite something: project sponsors from the industry will support the designs that they think most promising. From the development of the product through to a customised sales concept, they will be at the side of the up-and-coming talents. The finished product will then be presented free of charge at Kind + Jugend 2016.

The first one to benefit from such a successful cooperation was Jannis Ellenberger, winner of the Kids Design Award 2014. With his innovative concept for a modular desk system for children and adults, he won the heart and mind of children’s furniture manufacturer Jörg de Breuyn. The result: a contract for work and services. The furniture is being produced right now and will go into series production this year.
