Kind + Jugend 2016: trade fair breaks its own record

Exactly like for the age group that the trade fair focuses on, the same applies to Kind + Jugend: it grows and grows. After the trade fair was last year already able to book a record number of 1,141 exhibitors, it once again surpassed itself in 2016. 1,204 exhibitors from 50 countries make use of the most important platform of the branch to present their innovations from the segments of children’s furniture, children’s car seats and prams, hygiene articles, toys or textile outfitting. Kind + Jugend is thus not only larger, but also more international than ever before.

You too can also be there when the doors of the world’s leading trade fair open once again on 15 September. In an area of around 100,000 square metres, the exhibitors show everything that will be in demand next year in the baby and children’s outfitting industry. In the process, a special area of focus will be the hardware branch, as well as high quality, design-oriented products.

Exciting supporting programme

Besides the products, the information and supporting programmes also offer all kinds of inspiration. The first day of the fair is the day of the awards: starting with the Kids Design Award. It honours promising ideas and prototypes that have to date not been commercially available. With the Innovation Award, innovative products that are ready for the market are honoured that will be commercially available in the next season. Last but not least, the international Consumer Award allows a look at how well products are actually received by consumers.

The Design Parc is a special event for exclusive children’s furniture, living accessories and play products, and thus not only highly interesting, but also the ideal market entry point for extraordinary products. Young, innovative companies, whose products are already ready for the market find their place in JIU’s International Pavillion. And there is all kind of information on themes of relevance for the market, trends, figures or distribution questions to be found in the Trend Forum.

Positive development and increasing sales

The demographic development is still positive, and thus so are the market figures. In 2015, according to the estimate of the IFH Retail Consultants, parents spent a total of 2.4 billion Euros in the first three years of their children’s lives for baby and children’s outfitting, which corresponds to growth of five percent in comparison to the previous year. There is also positive news for the pram and children’s car seats markets: with 670,500 prams and 2.4 million children’s car seats sold, sales increased by 3 percent respectively. In the case of toys, this positive trend continues: the toy market on the whole grew by 6.6 percent, and the market for children 3 years of age and below even grew by 8.7 percent. Reason enough for the Bundesverband des Deutschen Spielwaren-Einzelhandels (Federal association of German toy retailers) e.V. (BVS) to also presume a stable market development for 2016.

Consistent at a high level are the sales for children’s and adolescent furniture of German production: customers spent 2.3 billion Euros for this in 2015. According to the Verband der Deutschen Möbelindustrie e.V. (Association of the German furniture industry) (VDM), the focus here is on quality, good design, multi-functionality, safety and the use of ecological materials. A big trend: play furniture that promotes motor skills right from the start.

Although the number of births continues to rise, the Bundesverband des Deutschen Texteinzelhandel (Federal association of German textiles retailers) (BTE) reported a slight drop in sales of children’s clothing in Germany in 2015 of 1.1 percent to the current figure of 2.69 billion Euros. The reason for this is a tendency toward the purchase of more affordable clothing. The industry will attempt to counter this with cuts and looks from the sports clothing segment and high quality ecological products.
