On the very first day of the trade fair, Kind + Jugend traditionally features two highlights: The Innovation Award and Kids Design Award honours particularly innovative products and creative design concepts, which set the theme for the following days. Many beaming faces could therefore be seen among the exhibitors as well as visitors.

The Kind + Jugend Innovation Award has been conferred for the last 14 years for new products for babies and toddlers that stand out for an especially innovative idea, outstanding technology, a high degree of functionality and/or extraordinary design. This year, nearly 200 products from 27 countries – around 18 percent more than in 2017 – were submitted for the coveted awards, which are recognised as a prestigious seal of quality in the industry. Of the 33 nominees, the following products prevailed in the eight prize categories:

“World of Moving Kids”: The Swedish company Bumprider AB won over the jury with its Bumprider Connect model. One stroller can be quickly and easily connected to another with magnets – ideal for transporting several children.

“World of Travelling Kids”: The Maxi-Cosi Jade baby carrier from Dorel Juvenile scores in terms of maximum safety as well as optimal comfort and easy handling. The child lies flat and safe – whether in the car or stroller.

“World of Moving & Travelling Kids Accesories”: The especially small and light Mini Sling carrying system from Dutch manufacturer Minimonkey grows with the child and is also suitable for all weather conditions.

“World of Kids Safety at Home”: The safety gate BUZZER from Felibaby GmbH impressed with its amazingly simple design: The buzzer button can be operated hands-free by parents, but cannot be reached children due to the additional mounting above the gate.

“World of Kids Toys”: The prize-winning Go-Kart BERG GO2 from BERG Toys B.V. from the Netherlands features a unique pedal system as well as an ergonomic, long-lasting design.

“World of Kids Textiles”: The Polish company Miapka Design has developed a windproof and waterproof soft shell jacket (Kids Jacket), which is buttoned at the crotch so it stays in place. The jacket is cotton lined and waterproof.

“World of Kids Care”: The CanDoCup from Miyali BV eases the transition from nursing to bottle feeding to child cup. The three handles and ergonomic design help the child learn to drink and swallow.

“World of Kids Furniture”: The Italian company Artsana S.p.A. won with its Baby Hug 4 in 1 product. The small baby bed is suitable for use as a seesaw, cradle, highchair and table chair, and can also be easily converted and moved.

Gintare Cerniauskaite secures the Kids Design Award 2018

Every year, Kind + Jugend presents the Kids Design Award with a focus on giving young designers the opportunity to introduce themselves to the trade world and establish contacts. It promotes product concepts and studies that are not yet commercially available. The ten nominated designers and design students will also have the opportunity to receive a product sponsorship by presenting their designs to manufacturers and retailers at a special event at Kind + Jugend. The goal of the sponsorship is to develop a prototype to the point of market maturity.

This year, a total of 140 young designers from 31 countries worldwide applied with their ideas. The young Lithuanian designer Gintare Cerniauskaite (Vilnius Academy of Arts) was selected as the brilliant winner for her product “Upe”. This educational wooden construction game helps children to read, write and count by constructing letters and numbers from pre-cut shapes. These shapes can also be used to create streets, bridges, castles or cartoon figures and encourage children to experiment.
Special mention also went to Lisanne Koning for “Inside the box”. This product is a standard box with images printed on the inside for creating toys from the box itself. Along with food and medicine, toys can also be sent to disaster-stricken areas and the box can be used again.
