We spoke to Ruth Kelly, Senior Trend Strategist at Trend Bible, a home and interiors dedicated trend agency who will once again provide an exclusive insight into the latest kids’ trends at Kind + Jugend 2016. 1. You are regularly publishing the latest lifestyle trends for kids. And at Kind + Jugend 2016, you will once again give exclusive insights into the upcoming season. Can you tell us a bit of what is to come in 2017?

Ruth Kelly: For 2017, there are several influences driving change in design for babies and kids. One of the key drivers that continue to be important is a ‘connection to nature’. You can see this influence in several of our design themes for spring/summer, with a real focus on protecting and learning from the natural world. (more…)

Hygiene and care trends for babies and children

Only the best for my child: Parents want to offer their babies and children high-quality and first-class products. In this connection, they are placing special value on health issues and paying increased attention to ingredients and pollutants. This particularly applies for the hygiene and care segment.

Natural and organic products are extremely popular with today’s parents. This trend is also reflected in the hygiene and care sector. Thus, one finds sustainable and pollutant-free products more and more frequently among the collections of the baby and toddler’s outfitters. For example, the focus lies on the special needs of sensitive baby skin. In order to avoid skin irritations, dryness and health risks, in the meantime many products are free from harsh chemicals. Beyond this the manufacturer Aleva Naturals from Canada relies for example on natural, eco-friendly substances such as eucalyptus and lavender oil. The Dutch manufacturer NAÏF also places special value on natural ingredients. Dermatologically tested, hypoallergenic and pH-neutral, the products are especially aligned for babies and children.

Kind + Jugend 2015 – all around a full success!

The Kind + Jugend has cleared up top marks this year. With more than 21,000 visitors from 110 countries five percent more trade visitors had come to Cologne than last year. And with 1,141 exhibitors from 50 countries the trade fair has set a new record among exhibitors. Thus, it has once again presented itself as the most important trade fair in the baby and toddler outfitting sector.

The significant visitor increase delighted the organizers of the trade fair – and apparently the many attendees spent successful days in Cologne. This could not only be felt itself in the good mood and relaxed atmosphere during the fair. Also the results of the visitor survey speak for themselves: 83 per cent were happy or very happy with the exhibition offering and their achievement of prior set personal goals. Over 93% of the visitors would recommend the Kind + Jugend to a business partner.

‘Not only the numbers but also the visitor survey show that quantity and quality of the exhibition was convincing all along the line. The concept of the trade fair which has a perfect offer for every market participant is worldwide regarding quality second to none’, said the manager of the Koelnmesse Katharina C. Hamma. On an area of 100,000 square meters exhibitors have presented novelties for four days and further product development serving kids furniture, safety seats and strollers, hygiene products, toys and fabric products. Also for Eric Wickbold, importer and distributor at Hightrade (Sao Paulo, Brasil), the days at the trade fair are essential. He sums up: ‘For us as a global operating import-agency the Kind+Jugend is certainly the most important place worldwide to meet all relevant companies and to support companies planning to enter the Brasilian market.’

At the Kids Design Award 2015 which took place for the second time now, Annika Marie Buchberger’s furniture series ‘full grown’ prevailed against 252 handed in drafts from 40 countries. Together with a kids’ furniture producer who had promised her his product-sponsorship after the awarding, the furniture series is going to be finished until it’s ready for the market.

The awarding of the Innovation Award which traditionally took place on the first day of the trade fair honored more happy winners. This year the jury got 174 drafts from 130 companies handed in from 25 countries.

We thank all exhibitors and visitors for a great Kind + Jugend 2015 and are already looking forward to next year:
